How to Balance Everything That Matters—Without Burning Out

Updated: 2 days ago

How to find balance in life: A modern playbook rooted in ancient wisdom

How do I balance everything that matters—without burning out or letting someone down—including myself?

It’s one of the sincerest questions—and one of the hardest to answer.

At The Fulfilled Man retreat, a powerful moment came when one of the men asked

“Yeah… but how?”

That question came from the heart and cut through the noise. Because we all want to feel aligned—where our work, relationships, passions, and peace aren’t always fighting for our attention.

So… how?!

Balance Isn't a Destination

The truth is, balance isn’t a destination. It’s not a fixed state you arrive at and hold onto forever.

Balance is a verb. A lived experience. A practice of mindful micro-adjustments.

The Fulfillment Code™

In our retreat, we explored an approach I call The Fulfillment Code™—a modern playbook rooted in ancient Vedic wisdom.

It's designed to help you harmonize what the Vedas call the Purusharthas—The four pursuits of a fulfilling human life:

🧭 Purpose – passion of meaning and contribution

🪙 Prosperity – profit of resourceful wealth

🎨 Pleasure – play of connection and creativity

🎯 Peace – presence of inner stillness and strength

A Venn diagram representing the four pursuits of fulfillment: Purpose, Prosperity, Pleasure, and Peace, showing how these elements intersect and harmonize for a balanced life.

Even with a framework like this, the “How” can feel elusive—especially when life feels like a juggling act between work, family, and your own needs.

A Skiing Metaphor for Life

This winter, I learned to ski—and honestly, it gave me the perfect metaphor for balance...

Kyle Jason Leitzke skiing down a slope, symbolizing the journey of balance and mindful adjustments in life, moving with purpose and flow.
Pointing your skis downhill? That’s Purpose. Turning left and right? That’s Prosperity and Pleasure And the feeling of flow? That’s Peace.

At first, I was terrified to point my skis straight down. I wasn’t confident in my ability to turn. I didn’t trust I could navigate the slope while keeping myself and others safe—just like I wasn’t always sure I could follow my purpose and still stay in control—financially, emotionally, or socially. It felt like choosing one meant sacrificing the others.

I’d jerk into a turn, overcorrect, and sometimes fall.

At first, I laughed it off. But the more it happened, the more I got frustrated.

Still—I kept going.

I got coaching.

I observed others.

I recorded myself.

I made small corrections.

I trusted the process.

And I’m still in the process, but I’ve found some rhythm. Some flow. Some peace in it all.

Moving down the mountain while constantly turning. Some bigger and longer, some smaller and shorter depending on the terrain and my comfort level.

Now, skiing is more than just a hobby—it’s a metaphor for how I live. I don’t force balance. I practice it. And I adjust in real time based on the terrain of life.

The Practice of Balance

Balance isn’t something you force. It’s something you practice.

We don’t live in perfect harmony all the time—but we can learn to listen, adjust, and align.

That’s why I practice and teach mindful micro-adjustments, not massive overhauls. Because fulfillment isn’t found in a rigid formula—it’s found in unlocking your coded recipe for how you move through life’s slopes.

Real Words from the Retreat

“My experience was raw, fulfilling, and impactful—giving me a lot to think about and a lot of structure for what it is I need to work on to be a more fulfilled man.” Brian, Retreat Participant

Your Turn: What's One Micro-Adjustment

So I’ll leave you with this:

What mindful micro-adjustment between your Purpose, Prosperity, and Pleasure could help you feel more Peace and fulfillment—right now?

Mastering balance is learning to move from unconscious reactionary jerks in our habits and lives—seeking purpose, cultivating prosperity, or pursuing pleasure—to lead our lives with more mindful micro adjustments—living on purpose, being resourceful, enjoying our simple luxuries, and being at peace with the flow.
